Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. So why is the busiest night on the Baltimore County Recreation and Parks calendar Friday, October 30? On that one evening, five county parks and nature centers run separate Halloween-season programs. Several of them work like a restaurant reservation. You get a timed slot, a per-person fee, and a sign-up through the county's CivicRec portal. Halloween week also has a front end. It starts Friday, October 23, in Parkville and runs into a free festival at Lake Roland in mid-November.
It Starts Friday Night on Elmont Avenue
The Holt Haunted Hike is Friday, October 23, at Holt Park and Center for the Arts, 34 Elmont Avenue. You walk the park's paved trail after dark. Each 30-minute slot has its own fright level, so you pick the slot that fits your group:
- 6 p.m.: Silly, not spooky
- 6:30 p.m.: Silly and Divertida, bilingual
- 7 p.m.: Slightly spooky
- 7:30 p.m.: Spooky and Escalofriante, bilingual
- 8 p.m.: Quite creepy!
- 8:30 p.m.: Creepy and de Miedo!, bilingual
Admission is $6 per person. The county asks you to register every attendee, and children under 10 must be with a registered adult. Bring a treat container. The hike hands out candy along with allergy-free and non-candy treats, and costumes are encouraged. Parking is in the arts center lot.
The 6 p.m. slot works for a preschooler. The 8:30 slot is for the teenager who says nothing scares them. When a group mixes ages, the slot you book matters more than the date.
Saturday the 24th Splits Between a Farm and a Campfire
The next day, the county's working farm runs Fall, Fun and Frights from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center for Maryland Agriculture and Farm Park, 1114 Shawan Road in Cockeysville. The program has hayrides, farm animals and a haunted barn for anyone brave enough. The Screen on the Green Movie Series is also showing Hocus Pocus for the whole event. Admission is free.
The county's festival announcement doesn't flag this one for advance registration. The Ag Center's general information page, though, says advance registration is required for all of its events and closes at 4 p.m. the Friday before. If that rule covers this festival, your deadline is 4 p.m. on Friday, October 23, a few hours before the first Holt hike. A quick check of the CivicRec catalog will tell you.
After dark, Lake Roland's Halloween Campfire runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A naturalist tells spooky stories around the fire and serves a warm treat. Costumes are welcome. It's listed for ages 6 and up at $6. On one Saturday, a family can do hayrides in Cockeysville at lunchtime and ghost stories at Lake Roland in the evening, all on county programming.
Friday, October 30, Is the Main Event
Here is the county's Fall 2026 program guide for one evening, the night before Halloween:
| Time | Program | Location | Ages | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. | Amazing Arachnids | Holt Park and Center for the Arts | 4+ | $3 |
| 5 to 6 p.m. | Creepy Critters | Lake Roland | All ages | $6 |
| 5 to 8 p.m. | Voices Around the Fire | Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum | All ages | $6 |
| 5 to 9 p.m. | Tricks and Treats on the Ridge | Oregon Ridge Nature Center | All ages | $3 |
| 7 to 9 p.m. | Eerie Evening Hike and Campfire | Marshy Point Nature Center | All ages | $6 |
These programs have little in common beyond the date.
Tricks and Treats on the Ridge is the one built for young trick-or-treaters. It's a walk of about half a mile through woods and meadow at Oregon Ridge Nature Center, 13555 Beaver Dam Road in Cockeysville. Each stop hands out a treat and explains how a plant or animal survives with tricks "up their leaves." Groups leave the Nature Center every 15 minutes. Advance registration is required through CivicRec, and admission is $3. The 15-minute departures are why booking matters. Your slot is a time, not just a day.
Eerie Evening Hike and Campfire at Marshy Point goes the other way. Flashlights aren't allowed. The hike goes through the forest in the dark, and the group regroups at a campfire with a treat afterward.
Creepy Critters at Lake Roland covers spiders, snakes, cockroaches, toads, bats, vultures and more, with some of them up close. Amazing Arachnids at Holt is a short hike to find Maryland's native spiders, followed by a spider craft.
Voices Around the Fire at Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum is a campfire evening of storytelling. It draws on African and African American oral heritage, Indigenous storytelling practices and the spirit of Día de los Muertos.
The Marshy Point date to check
Marshy Point also runs Trail or Treat, a midday walk deeper into the Marshy woods. You collect treats, meet a few frights along the way, and costumes are welcome. Admission is $3, and parking is in the nature center lot. The nature center is at 7130 Marshy Point Road. The county's September 17 festival announcement lists it for Friday, October 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and marks it as registration-required. The Fall 2026 program guide lists the same hours on Saturday, October 31. The registration page in CivicRec has the final word, so check it before you plan a Halloween morning in Essex.
The Season Turns From Frights to Harvest
The day after Halloween, the costumes come off and the programs change. Holt Harvest Day is Sunday, November 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. back at Holt Park. It has seasonal crafts, live music at the amphitheater and a cider press you can turn yourself. The program guide lists $6 and says some activities have fees. The county's event page describes admission as free, with fees for some activities. Bring a few dollars either way.
The next weekend has two free community events:
- Benjamin Banneker's Birthday Market Fair, Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum. It has live music, activities, and local and regional vendors.
- Community and Craft Fair, Sunday, November 8, at Rosedale Recreation Activity Center. The county lists it as free but hasn't posted hours.
November 7 also brings a change in Towson. Baltimore Fishbowl reported that The Gourmet at Kenilworth, at The Shops at Kenilworth, 800 Kenilworth Drive, will close for good after service that day, a little over five years after it opened. The owners said on social media they want to "treat this next month as a celebration." Their sister restaurant, Catonsville Gourmet at 829 Frederick Road, is staying open. If a seafood dinner in Towson is part of your fall plans, you have until November 7 to book it.
Dam Jam Closes It Out on November 14
The last big public event of the county's fall lineup is the Dam Jam Festival at Lake Roland. It runs Saturday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and admission is free. The program guide promises seasonal music on the main stage, family nature activities, vendors, exhibitors and live animals. The festival announcement doesn't flag it for advance registration, which makes it the easiest event of the season to decide on that morning.
History fans can stay for one more. The Fort Garrison Frontier Open House on Sunday, November 22, from noon to 3 p.m., is free and needs advance registration. The program guide says the open house happens once a year. It includes guided tours of the late-1600s stone fort, one of Baltimore County's oldest standing structures, along with hands-on activities and a taste of 17th-century recipes.
The programs with timed starts and capped groups are the Holt hike, Oregon Ridge, Trail or Treat and Fort Garrison, and they need a sign-up ahead of time. The large free festivals, including Fall, Fun and Frights if the Ag Center rule doesn't apply, are mostly come-as-you-are. If your Halloween plans are still open, start with the CivicRec catalog. Holt's first slot starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 23.
At the Nancy Hulsman Group, we keep an eye on calendars like this one because they're part of knowing a place well. That counts for our neighbors, and it counts for relocating families who want to see what a Baltimore County weekend looks like before they decide where to live.
